The nature of Northport's daily business means, bringing together a large range of people and skills in a multifaceted working environment, that can be extremely hazardous at times, to the untrained employee or visitor. Northport endeavours to create a safe working environment, through good communications and working relationships with all port users, whilst complying with all local and central government legislation.

The health and safety of employees, contractors and port users is considered by Northport Ltd as an integral part of doing business. The Health and Safety at Work Act places an obligation on Northport Ltd to take all practical steps to ensure the safety of every person who enters the port environs.

The nature of our business as a port facility means that there are numerous and varying activities being carried out within the boundaries of the port, which create high levels of risk to all individuals working onsite. This requires a close working partnership, with effective communication, between all port users.

Access to the facility is strictly controlled to meet Northport's obligations under the Maritime Security Act, Customs and Excise Act and Health and Safety at Work Act. Only authorised personnel or vehicles may access the facility by land or sea. Entry and exit is recorded via an electronic system or by signing in and out at the Port Services Centre.

Gantry Access

Northport provides gantries for use, to Logging Transport users only. Western gantry has an SWL of 8T and Eastern gantry has an SWL of 10T. To have access to these gantries, an application for use must be made via the below link.

Blue Access Map

Allows access to the Northport Limited Administration Building from the Port Services Centre and includes the portacoms, workshops and offices along the Administration Road.

Green Access Map

Allows access from the Western log truck entry through the Western weighbridge and along the Administration Road as far as the Tug Jetty. Green pass holders must not access any area further North (towards the berths) of the gantries or log storage areas.

Yellow Access Map

Allows access to all Port areas including the log yard. As an extreme risk area, the log yard may
only be entered with a 4m high flag, hard hat (if exiting the vehicle), and following
promulgation of the required notifications.

New guidance and policies for ports

Ports are complex, dynamic, and high-risk environments where there are a number of drivers of harm. Extending Maritime NZ’s Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA) designation provides us with the legal mandate and additional resourcing to take a wider view of how port businesses are managing risks, developing systems, performing safety operations, and engaging with workers.

Northport Limited is an international gateway into New Zealand and has a statutory obligation to comply with many types of legislation, these regulations may impact on your visit to the Port. Reporting Incident Forms

Incidents \ Accidents \ Hazard identification

All incidents, accidents and or near misses on Northport land, regardless of how minor are required to be reported to Northport within 24 hours after the event. Should you identify a hazard within the Port, use the following link to record your hazard directly into our hazard reporting system. All Health & Safety reporting or enquiries should be directed to our Health and Safety Manager.

Port Facility Health & Safety Requirements

Northport employs and contracts with only a small percentage of the total number of personnel who use the Northport facility. Therefore, NPL has formed a Northport Facility Health and Safety Committee to bring together a number of Port User Companies to agree on a common set of requirements that shall apply to all Port Users.

Hazardous Substance Storage & cargo handling 

Hazardous cargoes could present a risk to people, property or the environment if damaged, spilt or ignited. The primary function of a Port is to facilitate the transport of cargo and as such it is necessary to ensure hazardous substances are handled across wharves safely and within both maritime and territorial regulations.

Timber Fumigation- Methyl Bromide

The NZ Government, through its agency the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), is resolved to reduce the use of ozone depleting substances in accord with the Montreal Protocol. The Montreal Protocol is an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of numerous substances that are responsible for ozone depletion.
